James Findlay

James Findlay

20th Jun 2010@ 13:30 Big Top

James Findlay is a Dorset based traditional singer, fiddler and guitarist. He started playing the fiddle at about eight years old, and guitar at the age of fifteen. Coming from family of traditional singers his love lies in traditional English folk music and ballads, though he enjoys all genres of music. His presentation and musical style is inspired by guitarist Nic Jones, and singers such as The Watersons and The Young Tradition.

James was a winner in the ‘New Roots’ national competition for up-and-coming folk performers judged by, among others, Eliza Carthy and Pete Coe. His prize was a session in a professional recording studio which resulted in his first album ‘As I Carelessly Did Stray’ being released in 2009.

James has been described in the press as 'The new Seth Lakeman' (a comparison he dislikes!). He won the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2010 award, and is now busy recording an album for Fellside Records. He currently lives in Dorchester where he works as a handyman, and plays in clubs and pubs as a solo act, and in the duo Fingerz ‘n’ Fretz. He also frequently plays at festivals with the Dyer-Cummings Band, a group of young ceilidh musicians from Somerset.
